Vietnam and Cambodia have treasured a long lasting relationship. Since they established diplomatic ties on June 24, 1967, they have steadily strengthened cooperation in various areas.

Vietnam-Cambodia relationship develops comprehensively

Vietnam and Cambodia have regularly exchanged visits between senior leaders. In late 2013 Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techno Hun Sen visited Vietnam, his first trip after being re-appointed. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung visited Cambodia during his first overseas trip in 2014.

Since the beginning of this year, both countries have organized several activities to mark the 35th anniversary the day when Vietnamese and Cambodians overthrew the brutal Pol Pot regime saving Cambodia’s people from further genocide. Vietnam and Cambodia have strengthened cooperation in economics, trade and investment. In 2013, two-way trade reached 3.5 billion USD. Vietnam has more than 100 investment projects in Cambodia, most of them involve cash crop cultivation, mining, oil, gas, electricity, telecommunications, finance, and banking.

Vietnam and Cambodia have also boosted cooperation in security and defense. They have coordinated closely in resolving border violations, maintained joint patrols at sea, and stepped up cooperation in training, and search and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the wars in Cambodia. The two countries have worked closely in border demarcation and marker planting to build a border of peace, friendship, stability and development. President of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin said:“Vietnam and Cambodia always aim at building a good relationship and comprehensive cooperation, and support each other in international forums. Vietnam and Cambodia have signed an Agreement on Building a Land Border and agreed to boost economic cooperation on the basis of respecting each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

Parliamentary cooperation is important for bilateral ties

Vietnam and Cambodia have increased exchanges of visits between the two Parties, States, National Assemblies, and local authorities. The two countries’ legislatures have organized several conferences on issues of great importance to the region and have continuously strengthened their cooperation and participated in dialogue mechanisms to expand their relations with other countries in the region. President of the Cambodian National Assembly Heng Samrin said:“The two legislatures have exchanged visits of senior leaders and members creating opportunities to trade experience and information in the interests of the two countries and peoples. In the last term, the two legislatures signed cooperative agreements to expand friendship, solidarity, cooperation and sustainable development”.

The visit by the President of the Cambodian National Assembly demonstrates Cambodia’s respect for enhancing its relationship with Vietnam.
