The Mekong River Delta remains one of the country’s key economic hubs.

The highlight of the program was the Mekong River Delta Investment Promotion Conference organized by the Southwest Region Steering Committee in line with the State Bank of Vietnam, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, and the Planning and Investment Ministry. Deputy PM Vu Van Ninh, commercial counselors, and representatives from 180 domestic and foreign companies attended the conference. Participants discussed the need to create regional links through which provinces and sectors can attract more investment projects in the processing industry, tourism, finance, and infrastructure development. Tran Bac Ha, President of the Board of Directors of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, says ‘In order to develop the Mekong River Delta in the future, I propose the local authorities check the planning of each province and the whole region while increasing investment in irrigation, transport, and enhancing the development of brands for the region’s major products’.

Deputy PM Ninh said that since the Mekong River Delta is one of the country’s key economic hubs, the Party and Government have paid special attention to boosting its growth. The Government leader asked relevant agencies at all levels to encourage domestic and foreign enterprises to do business there. Ninh also called for more policies to develop rice growing, seafood, fruits, oil and gas refining and tourism, and instructed provinces to focus on transportation, education, production, and inter-region cooperation. Mr. Ninh says ‘We should concentrate on developing human resources, especially high quality personnel, and applying science and technology in areas which are keys to the restructuring of the provincial and city economy. We should combine economic development and culture, healthcare, education, and take care of people’s living conditions both materially and spiritually, particularly that of ethnic minority groups’.

At the meeting, local authorities announced almost 180 projects to boost investment and licensed 21 investment projects worth nearly 170 million USD.

Over the past decade, since the Poliburo resolution on rapid and sustainable socio-economic development in the Mekong River Delta was launched, this key economic hub has seen some remarkable achievements including an average annual economic growth rate of 12%.
