Vietnam has gained significant achievements in all aspects after 30 years of renewal. Vietnam avoided socio-economic crisis to become a middle-income country. During those years, the GDP increased rapidly and in 2014 income per capita reached 2,000 USD. Vietnamese people’s living conditions have improved significantly and Vietnam’s prestige has risen thanks to mobilization of resources from the people.

People’s resources

During the renewal period, the Vietnamese Party and State paid special attention to improving people’s living conditions and upholding the people’s right of mastery by strengthening national unity and reducing poverty. Vietnam’s poverty rate fell from 60% in 1990 to 6% in 2015, with 30 million people escaping poverty. 95% of Vietnamese children attend primary schools and 80% attend lower secondary schools. Vietnam’s achievements in social security have been recognized globally. Vietnam plans to become a modern industrial country by focusing on science, technology, education, and skilled human resources and stronger commodity-oriented agriculture.

Resources to be tapped for renewal

Professor Doctor Do The Tung is former Director of the Political Economics Institute of the Ho Chi Minh National Politics Academy: “We need to either strengthen scientific research or import technology. To this end, we need to find ways to mobilize human and material resources.”

The Vietnamese Party intends to promote sustainable growth in economics, culture, society and the environment to strengthen national renewal. Mr. Nguyen Sy Dung is former Deputy Head of the National Assembly Office: “We have promoted business freedom. The Ministry of Industry and Trade recently introduced 20 areas of state monopoly which limit the freedom to do business. We need to give the public access to the market and the freedom to do business and move away from state monopoly.”

At its 12th National Congress, the Communist Party of Vietnam identified the task of comprehensively strengthening renewal and mobilizing all resources for rapid and sustainable national growth.
