Vietnam aims at greater socio-economic growth

(VOVworld) – The government’s supplementary report on socio-economic development in 2014 and the situation since the beginning of this year said all set targets have been fulfilled. The report, delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the 9th session of the 13th National Assembly which opened on May 20, also identified the government’s principal tasks in the remaining months of this year to ensure better and more sustainable socio-economic outcomes than last year. Last year’s socio-economic targets attained

The report showed that Vietnam attained almost all the socio-economic targets set for 2014. Of 14 key criteria, 13 criteria were fulfilled and 1 criterion on the rate of trained workers was nearly reached. Deputy Prime Minister Phuc said: "Last year’s GDP growth was 5.98%, which was higher than the set target and the highest rate since 2011.The macro-economy was stable with the CPI increasing 1.84%, the lowest rate in several years. Export revenue grew 13.7% and 2014 was the third year in a row with a trade surplus of 2.1 billion USD. Social security has been ensured and people’s living conditions have been improved. National defense, security, and sovereignty have been strengthened and political security and social order have been maintained. External affairs and international integration have recorded positive results."

Deputy Prime Minister Phuc said that despite several difficulties, particularly the complex situation in the East Sea, the socio-economic results have validated the great efforts made by the Party and the people.

Socio-economic situation in early 2015 positive

The government report said that since the beginning of the year the economy has obtained visible results in all sectors. The CPI in April increased 0.04%, the lowest rate in many years. The total export revenue increased 8.2%. Foreign direct investment increased 5% to 4.2 billion USD. The GDP growth rate in the first quarter was 6.03%, the highest rate in 5 years.

The government has focused on implementing its master plan on economic reform and dealing with bad debts. Policies for revolutionary contributors have been ensured and events were held to mark national celebrations. More than 500,000 jobs were generated, 2.7% more than in the same period last year.

About national defense, security, external relations, and international integration, Deputy Prime Minister Phuc said: “Our national sovereignty has been maintained and our defense and security capabilities have been strengthened. Political security and social order have been ensured. External affairs have been carried out bilaterally and multilaterally to bolster relations with other countries and to call for greater support for Vietnam at international forums. Party external affairs have been combined with state-to-state and people-to-people diplomacy.  Vietnam successfully hosted the 132nd IPU General Assembly.”

7 essential tasks in the remainder of 2015

The government’s 7 priority tasks for the remainder of the year include improving the investment environment and removing obstacles to business to boost growth; stepping up economic restructuring; improving people’s spiritual and material lives; accelerating administrative reform; preventing corruption and waste; increasing the effectiveness of external relations and international integration; and improving information and communications. Deputy Prime Minister Phuc said: “This year we target a GDP growth rate of 6.2%, a 10% increase in export turnover, a 5% increase in the Consumer Price Index, and 1.6 million new jobs. We will continue our master plan on restructuring the economy and the strategy to safeguard national sovereignty in the new situation.”

2015 marks many important events in Vietnam and is the last year of the 5-year term of the 11th Party Central Committee. Party congresses at all levels will be organized towards the 12th National Party Congress. The government asked the National Assembly, the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and people across Vietnam to increase supervision and coordination towards achieving all the development targets set for this year.
