New rural development in Lam Dong province’s Don Duong district

(VOVworld) – Don Duong district is the largest organic vegetable growing area of Lam Dong province. As part of efforts to implement a national program on new rural development, the local authorities have applied new modern technologies in agricultural production to improve their products’ quality, thus contributing to the local socio-economic development.

Don Duong district has set a target of completing all 19 criteria of the national program on new rural development by 2015. The local authorities have managed to mobilize nearly 400,000 USD, 1/4 donated by local individuals, to upgrade the local infrastructure. Don Duong district’s Party Secretary Thai On said that in addition to upgrading the infrastructure, the national program on new rural development also attaches great importance to improving the people’s living conditions in combination with sustainable poverty reduction. On told VOV: "A poor district, Don Duong started from scratch in 2005 with a focus on developing the local agricultural sector by restructuring local crops and husbandry. We’ve also paid due attention to applying advanced technologies to improve productivity."

The district applied modern technology to 70% of 22,000 hectares allocated for growing vegetables in 2013, generating annual revenue of 7,500 USD/ha. The local authorities have taught the local Cho Ru and K’Ho people to apply modern science and technology to their production. Thai On again: "About 75% of our population is Catholic. Our success in improving local living standards is due to the local authorities, local religious dignitaries, and local people’s determination to develop their economy."

Home to 11,000 residents, ¼ of whom are ethnic minorities, Ka Do commune, Don Duong district, is taking the lead in implementing the national new rural development program. The commune has completed 15 out of 19 criteria. In just 2 years, the local ethnic people have become more familiar with applying modern technology to production, which has improved their productivity. Ka Do commune now has 1500 hectares allocated for vegetable growing, earning the local people an average income of 7500 USD/ ha. Vu Quang Hau and his family reserve 15,000 square meters for farming. Hau has built a greenhouse and an irrigation system for horticulture. Hau said: "This year is my third year growing flowers in a greenhouse. This has given us a stable source of income, much more than growing vegetables. More and more people have switched from ordinary farming to growing flowers in greenhouse."

Don Duong district authorities have encouraged farmers to restructure their crops for better productivity and quality as an effective method of new rural development.
