Nguyen Tri Quang, founder of Vietnam’s first digital heritage museum

(VOVworld) – Vr3d.vn, the brainchild of Nguyen Tri Quang, is the first and so far the only three dimensional antiques museum in Vietnam. The website contains more than 100 exhibits, which have been digitized using 3D technology. Bui Hang reports:

Quang, in his 20s, became interested in 3D scanning a long time ago. When he was in the 8th grade, Quang designed a website to advertise the fine art articles produced by his family. He realized that 3D scanning is of great help in several fields: promoting cultural heritages, preserving antiques, trade promotion, healthcare, and education. He has posted the antiques he has collected to the Internet so that researchers and sculptors can use them as reference for their work. Quang said: “I hope I can use this technology to digitize all of Vietnam’s cultural heritages to create a digital database. This will make it easier to manage and promote Vietnamese artifacts and heritages.”

Quang’s mother Pham Thi Thao said: “Quang has great determination and passion for his work. We think that what he has been doing is right and we’re happy for that.”

Quang said he has encountered a number of problems trying to master Vr3d – Virtual Reality 3D technology: “There were many technical problems in the beginning. The antiques are scattered in different places, which sometimes were difficult to locate. It took me a lot of time to get to their places and 3D scan.”

Quang has received support from researchers, who provided him with necessary information about the antiques such as their date and place of origin and in turn Quang’s 3D photos facilitate their work. Fine art researcher Tran Hau Yen The said: “Researchers like me really appreciate Quang’s work because his 3D photos give us a 360 degree view of the objects, which in reality are difficult to view from different angles.”

Quang’s website gives viewers a panoramic view of Vietnam’s antiques through different periods of history. More importantly, it helps significantly to research, restore, and replicate Vietnamese antiques.
