Annan affirms roles of Russia, Iran in Syria crisis

Kofi Annan, joint envoy of the UN and Arab League yesterday underscored the key roles of Russia and Iran in efforts to end violence in Syria.

Mr. Annan declined to echo the opinion that Russia and Iran are barriers to Syria’s peace progress and made no mention of those countries which have provided weapons and financial resources to Syrian opposition groups. Annan will arrive in Syria today to discuss his six-point peace plan with Syrian leaders. This is Annan’s third trip to Syria since clashes broke out here.
