Better compliance with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea

(VOVworld) – A ministerial level discussion on policy, experiences, and challenges in maritime and oceanic management and the implementation of sustainable development goals opened in Jakarta on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Asian-African Conference. In his address, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc urged Asian and African nations to develop a post-2015 development agenda, which should include maritime and oceanic goals, increased cooperation in exploiting maritime resources, compliance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and navigation safety, security, and freedom. He called on countries to work together to deal with challenges in the region, including the East Sea, threats to navigation security and safety, and violations of international law. Delegates stressed the need for cooperation in handling climate change, piracy, and maritime disputes with the 1982 UNCLOS being the foundation for maritime cooperation.
