A spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry claimed the US has reneged on a landmark nuclear deal reached at six-party talks in 2005, in which the two countries agreed to respect each other’s sovereignty and co-existence, adding that the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula will completely lose its meaning if the US keeps trying to topple North Korea.
International pressure has been mounting on North Korea to improve its human rights record. The UN General Assembly will discuss North Korea’s human rights record next week. North Korea has urged the UN Security Council to put on its agenda the CIA’s “medieval” torture of suspected terrorists.
