(VOVworld) – The European Union's foreign policy chief on Friday protested the US call to provide lethal, defensive weapons to Ukraine in its fight against separatists in the eastern region.

Federica Mogherini insisted that the implementation of the peace deal brokered in Minsk last month "is the way to go forward."

Also on Friday, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said arms deliveries "would only stoke the fire" because the EU’s goal must be a ceasefire, not an escalation".

At a meeting between Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz and Secretary of the Ukrainian Security and Defense Council Oleksandr Turchynov, Poland agreed to provide training for Ukrainian soldiers to improve the country’s combat capacity.
