French FM: Syrian opposition willing to resume talks without conditions

(VOVworld) - The Syrian opposition is willing to resume negotiations with Bashar al-Assad's regime without conditions, France's Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said after talks between Western powers and opposition representatives in Paris on Saturday.

The French official said parties involved need to tie down the conditions for a genuine political transition, and negotiations must resume on a clear basis within the framework of the UN resolution.

The move took place when the opposition forces backed by Western countries are falling into disgrace. The US and Western powers are seeking ways to delay the Syrian government’s military operation.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US-backed Arab-Kurdish alliance, on Saturday announced "phase two" of its campaign for IS’s Syrian stronghold of Raqqa. The announcement was made after US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter said Washington will send 200 more troops to back the offensive.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a monitoring group, said IS fighters had re-entered Syria's ancient city of Palmyra after they attacked Palmyra's neighborhoods, where they were driven out in March.

The same day, the IS declared it shot down a warplane of the Syrian administration near Palmyra.
