IPU 132 has historic, political and diplomatic significance to Vietnam

(VOVworld) – The 132nd General Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU 132), to be held in Hanoi from March 28th until April 1st, will welcome 160 foreign delegations from member parliaments and international organizations.

Participants are expected to have a general debate themed “Sustainable development goals: Turning words into action”. Opinions will be collected to the draft resolutions proposed by 4 standing committees on peace and security, sustainable development, finance and trade, democracy and human rights. Parliamentarians will work on UN issues and an emergency resolution.

200 women parliamentarians will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Women Parliamentarians’ meeting mechanism. The sidelines meetings will focus on gender equality and promotion of human rights.

A media center for IPU 132 was inaugurated on Thursday at the My Dinh National Convention Center. Equipped with high-speed internet, the center is able to facilitate 300 journalists to work at the same time.

Jemini Pandia Gillijns, who is in charge of communications at the IPU Secretariat, said: “Our press conferences for the Assembly will be held here. Journalists will be able to have access to audio and video files. Interviews with the participants attending the Assembly will be conducted here. For us who come from outside Vietnam, it’s very fantastic to see your hard preparations. We’re all eager to see this to be a fantastic and successful Assembly. I’m sure it will be.”

The media center hosted the first international conference on Thursday to provide information about IPU 132.

At a reception for IPU President Saber Chowdhury on Wednesday, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Vietnam highly values IPU’s role, adding that Vietnam appreciates the IPU 132’s theme “Sustainable development goals: Turning words into action”, which is appropriate for the 2015 context and the IPU strategy for 2012-2017. Prime Minister Dung promised Vietnam’s concerted effort to make IPU 132 a success.
