(VOVworld) – An informal plenary session with the Secretary-General-designate António Guterres took place at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday.

Representatives of all member nations congratulated and expressed their high expectations for the UN’s new leader.

Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of the Vietnam Mission to the UN, delivered a congratulatory speech to Mr. Guterres and conveyed a message of gratitude to the outgoing Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for his contributions to the UN over the past decade.

Ambassador Nga said the General Assembly’s adoption of the Security Council’s resolution provides a resolute support to Mr. Guterres and trust in his determination, vision, leadership, and experience.

This means the public has high hopes that the new UN leader will continue with UN efforts in addressing challenges of the new era, including climate change, threats of wars and conflicts, terrorism, and extreme violence.

Vietnam also hoped that Mr. Guterres will do his utmost to mobilize resources and partner relations to realize the 2030 Development Agenda and reform the UN in line with its goals and principles.
