(VOVworld) - Sergio Mattarella, a judge in the Constitutional Court, was elected new Italian President on Saturday, taking over from 89-year-old Giorgio Napolitano, who resigned earlier this month. This signaled a political victory to Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and the ruling Democratic party. Mattarella was predicted to win the post as he received great support from the Democratic party which is holding the majority of seats in the parliament.
