Secretary of Hanoi’s Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi called the celebration a glorious and important milestone in Hanoi’s one-thousand-year history. The victory on October 10, 1954 put an end to French colonial rule and opened a new era of development for Hanoi and Vietnam. He said: “Vietnamese people are proud of that victory. Under the clear-sighted leadership of the Party led by President Ho Chi Minh, the people and army of Hanoi fought with courage and staunchness to liberate the capital city."

After Liberation Day, Hanoi began to develop the economy, build socialism and support the southern region in fighting US imperialists, contributing to the victory of the 1975 spring offensive, which liberated southern Vietnam and reunified the country.

Mr. Nghi said after 1975 Hanoi joined the nation’s reform efforts and recorded important achievements. Since its administrative boundary expansion in 2008, Hanoi has been striving to be the national center of politics, culture and economics. On the path of integration, Hanoi has witnessed considerable infrastructure changes.

Mr. Nghi attributed Hanoi’s achievements to the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh as well as the patriotism and ceaseless efforts of Hanoi’s officials, soldiers and citizens. In the new revolutionary phase, Hanoi will try harder to be the nation’s role model and consolidate people’s trust in the Party, the State, and the socialist regime. He said: “Hanoians will continue to uphold our historical, cultural and revolutionary traditions to achieve sustainable green growth and to become the national center of politics, administration, culture, science, education, economics, and international transactions. We’ll strive to deserve the people’s trust and the love of international friends.”
