The event was co-organized by the High Command of the Vietnam Marine Police, the US embassy’s Export Auditing and Border Security program. The three-day conference aims to review cooperation in ensuring security and order in the Gulf of Thailand. Participants will share experiences in improving the efficiency of maritime law enforcement, as well as building trust, and deepening mutual understanding. Delegates also identified targets and areas of joint cooperation between countries to assure security in territorial waters in the region. Major General Nguyen Quang Dam, commander of the Vietnam Marine Police, said: “Over the past time, we have cooperated with other forces in maritime law enforcement to assure the legal rights of Vietnamese fishermen. This has helped raise Vietnam’s role in ASEAN countries, and especially countries in the Gulf region”.

Rena Bitter, the US Consul General in HCM City, affirmed her nation’s commitment to supporting efforts in ensuring security for territorial waters in Southeast Asia. She said she believes that maritime law enforcement will contribute to both regional and US’ stability, peace and prosperity.
