Protesters filled up the city's busiest areas

The disruption broke out on Sunday at the government headquarters in Admiralty then quickly spread to Causeway Bay and Mongkok. More than 20,000 protesters filled up the city's busiest areas. Although the police did not feel they had to deploy anti-violence forces, they failed to disperse the crowd.

Protesters asked the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China to withdraw its recent decision on changes to the electoral process for Hong Kong’s 2017 elections. According to the resolution, a 1,200-strong Nominating Committee controlled by Beijing will pick two to three candidates before putting them forward for a vote by some 5 million eligible voters.
