(VOVworld) – The UN Security Council on Tuesday voted on a resolution on sanctions on Syria for chemical weapon use. While nine of the Council’s 15 members voted in favor, Bolivia joined Russia and China to veto the resolution. Egypt, Ethiopia, and Kazakhstan abstained. A negative vote in effect a veto by any of the Council’s five permanent members means a resolution is not adopted.

The resolution, drafted by France, Britain, and the United States, is based on UN resolution 2118 on chemical weapon using in Syria. The new resolution proposed targeted sanctions including a travel ban and asset freeze on 11 Syrian military commanders and officials, as well as on 10 government and other entities, connected with the sale or supply of helicopters, chlorine gas, and other chemical weapons to the Syrian government as those have been used against Syrian civilians.
