Russia criticizes illegal protests in Moscow

(VOVworld) – A spokesman for the Russian President said Russia will not respond to the request of the European Council and the US State Department to release people arrested during illegal protests in Moscow on Sunday.
Dmitry Peskov said demonstrations organized by the opposition party were illegal and provocative. The government will consider requests for legal demonstrations, he said, adding that certain meetings on Sunday were in line with the law.

Hundreds of people were arrested at anti-government protests nationwide organized by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The government said some of the people were hired to join the protest. Navalny was arrested on Sunday and appeared in court on Monday.
