Surpassing the required two-thirds majority in the House of Commons, May wasted no time ordering an early vote. She said this election is the only way to guarantee certainty and stability as Britain negotiates its exit from the EU.

May's Conservatives currently hold a slim majority in the House of Commons, 330 out of 650 seats. An early election will almost certainly gain the Conservatives more seats, strengthening May’s political support in the upcoming Brexit negotiations.
