The UN General Assembly met on Thursday to discuss the crisis in Syria. The Assembly is likely to vote on a draft resolution that condemns the Security Council for failing to take action against the Syrian government.

The meeting came after Russia and China used their veto powers to reject a Western-proposed draft resolution that threatened the Syrian government with sanctions if they failed to end the violence. The Assembly’s draft resolution is considered a condemnation aimed at Moscow and Beijing. The draft resolution reiterates the Arab League’s call for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign and allow a political transition to a democratic government.
