Vietnam accelerates economic restructuring and new growth model

(VOVworld) - Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc delivered a speech Tuesday in Jakarta, Indonesia at the opening plenary session of the World Economic Forum (WEF), themed “East Asia in the new global context”. Deputy Prime Minister Phuc said Vietnam is working towards a new stage of economic development by accelerating its economic restructuring and new growth model shifting and improving its market economy. Phuc said Vietnam has also been making responsible contributions to the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community and cooperation mechanisms in the region while remaining actively involved in negotiating many major free trade agreements. East Asia has a number of opportunities for cooperation, but stability and development in the region face challenges caused by climate change, strategic competition, territorial disputes, and threats to security and safety of navigation and aviation. He said sea disputes must be resolved by peaceful measures based on international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and stressed that Vietnam works with other countries and partners on the principles of cooperation, honesty and mutual trust in order to build a peaceful and stable environment in the region.

Meeting Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Deputy PM Phuc suggested close bilateral coordination in preparing for the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties. 

The same day, Deputy PM Phuc and his Russian counterpart, Arkady Dvokovich, agreed to step up honoring of commitments made during Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev’s recent Vietnam visit. Deputy PM Phuc also met with WEF Executive Director Philipp Rosler and Deputy Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic and Cooperation Development Mari Kiviniemi. Deputy PM Phuc will attend and deliver speeches to several key sessions of the forum on Tuesday.
