Chau is one of nine candidates and the first Vietnamese candidate for the top post at UNESCO.

In his action plan, Chau put forth three messages about UNESCO’s vision along with suggested reforms to improve the organization.

Following his presentation, Chau answered questions from the Executive Board about how he would deal with challenges facing UNESCO.

He said: “UNESCO should continue contributing to peace, a sacred mission set by the organization’s charter. Second, it should press on with reforms to operate more effectively and dynamically, expand its cooperation, and boost its stature among UN organizations. Third, UNESCO needs better communication activities to show the world that the organization not only focuses on issues of culture and education but is also strongly supportive of natural and social sciences, and that it is determined to coordinate with countries to build a global information society in which every individual has the right to access information.”

During his presentation, Chau introduced Vietnam’s history, socio-economic accomplishments, and foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and diversification and multilateralization of relations. The UNESCO Executive Board will elect the new General-Director by secret ballot at its next session in October.
