(VOVworld) – Hamlet chief Nguyen Thi Tham is quite familiar to everyone in Doai Khe hamlet, Dan Phuong district in Hanoi. Tham has spared no effort to engage the people in building a new lifestyle in the area. She was among Hanoi’s most outstanding women in 2013.

Tham has won the trust and respect of all the people in Doai Khe hamlet. Bui Van Hien says she is the only hamlet chief who knows all the residents and small lanes in the area: “Tham is a person of action. Unlike previous hamlet chiefs, she lives and works close to the people.”

Tham was elected hamlet chief in 2003 when Doai Khe was badly polluted. In response to the movement to build new rural areas, she explained to the people the benefits of paving roads and protecting the environment and her efforts finally paid off. Local residents contributed more than 5,000 workdays and 40,000 USD to upgrade local roads. Chu Thi Hoi said: “We’ve helped ourselves by contributing to improving roads. We keep the environment clean to protect our health.”

To change the people’s thinking and behavior, Tham has mobilized and coordinated all social organizations in awareness-raising activities. Despite her age, Tham personally joined the people in construction work. She said: “The overall policy is disseminated and discussed thoroughly in meetings of party committees and local organizations. Party members and local officials then meet with the people to explain to them their rights to know, to discuss, to implement, to oversee, and to benefit.”
