In one year the “Beautiful and not beautiful Hanoi” project has involved a large number of young people. Its website: www.hanoidep.vn has become a forum for discussing the behavior of Hanoians and Vietnamese people under the themes of cuisine, dress, travel, communication, and entertainment. The forum welcomes everyone and entries are diverse, including be them articles, quizzes, and pictures. The website has received 4,000 entries so far. Project leader Vu Anh Long said: “Our website targets young people with the aim of improving their behavior and creating good habits. There are two categories: beautiful and not beautiful pictures. People vote and winners receive prizes. Pictures with the most votes will be exhibited. Our aim is to establish a community to gradually change bad behavior.”

The project has implemented a number of community activities to give young people an opportunity to exchange ideas on improving themselves. Project Secretary Nguyen Thi Le Quyen said: “We have organized 6 events, each of which attracted approximately 1,000 people. They included a flash mob called I love Hanoi and the arrangement of a giant flower to honor Vietnamese teachers. We also participated in activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Hanoi’s liberation on October 10, 2014.”

The project has sponsored a number of events in Hanoi with the same goal: improving the city’s human resources and promoting the elegant, civilized culture of Hanoi among young people. Quyen said: “Each project member, collaborator, or volunteer always keeps in mind the core message: each individual’s actions can make Hanoi more beautiful, elegant, and civilized. This is the task of each and every young person.”

Nguyen Tien Binh of Thanh Do University has been a collaborator since the project’s very first days: “I learned about this project via the media. I have joined many volunteer activities because I want to contribute to the community.”

With just a smart phone that can take photos or record video clips, any one can be a collaborator of the project and their reflection of bad and good behavior will help to change people’s awareness toward building an elegant, civilized Hanoi.
