Youth Union members have been engaged in a project to improve Dai Phong road, which connects 3 communes in Tien Yen district. The 11km road, which cost approximately 700,000 USD, eases travel for local ethnic minorities, including Tay, Dao, and San Chi, and gives them easier access to schools, hospitals, and markets. Hoang Thi Kim of Dai Duc commune said: “In all kinds of weather I had to carry my child on my back to school because the road was muddy. We often came here covered in mud.”

Hoang A Ma of Dai Duc commune said: “It used to take me almost half a day to go from my home to the market and back. The road was very rocky.”

Quang Ninh’s Youth Union mobilized its members, who are young people and soldiers, to upgrade the road. The upgrade of Dai Phong road was completed in 3 months. Truong Cong Ngan, Party Secretary and Chairman of the Tien Yen district People’s Committee, said: “The improvement of the road will stimulate the local economy, boost forest plantation, ease the transport of goods to highland areas, and ensure national security and defense.”

Local people’s dream of a decent inter-communal road has come true. Hoang Thi Kim of Dai Duc commune said: “Transportation is much easier now. The paved road has shortened our travel time significantly.”

Hoang A Ma said the road has changed their lives for the better: “We are very glad that the state has helped us upgrade this road, making our lives a lot easier.”

The Dai Phong road project was part of the provincial Youth Union’s response to Vietnam’s Youth Month of Action, which takes place every March.
