(VOVworld) - The achievements that Vietnam has gained in agriculture are ensuring food security and fulfilling the UN Millennium Development Goals. An event marking the 35th World Food Day in Lao Cai province on Thursday was themed “Social security and agriculture: breaking the hunger and poverty spiral”, stressing the importance of social security system in reducing poverty, ensuring food security and nutrition, and improving living conditions. In an interview with VOV, Jong-Ha Bae, a representative from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said: "Vietnam has gained significant achievements in poverty reduction and this has been acknowledged by the international community. But we know that there are poverty risks facing women, children, and ethnic groups in remote areas. It’s necessary for us to put more effort into improving the situation in these disadvantaged areas. The Vietnamese government has implemented a number of policies to reduce poverty. UN agencies like FAO consider this a pressing issue. WE pledge to help the Vietnamese government tackle this issue. Evidence of this commitment is our effort to build a sustainable fund to support Vietnam in reducing poverty and improving child nutrition."
