The East Sea: Central to Asia – Pacific Peace and Security

(VOVworld) – An international conference entitled “The East Sea: Central to Asia – Pacific Peace and Security” has been held in New York city. The conference drew on the expertise of leading scholars and experts from the U.S., China, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, and Vietnam.

In her address, Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha, Head of the International Law and Convention Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Vietnam insists to resolve disputes on the East Sea through peaceful means, based on the principles of respecting international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. American Professor Jerome Cohen of the New York University of Law said disputes on the East Sea relating to international politics and law, thus it should be handled by international law and institution. Professor Robert Beckman of the National University of Singapore said China should respect international law in dealing with the current disputes. Christopher Hill, former US Vice Secretary of State, stressed China will not benefit from enhancing tensions with neighboring countries.
