Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, said the UN Security Council should promote its role in peacefully resolving disputes and preventing conflicts. She highlighted ASEAN’s role in ensuring regional security and stability despite developments in the East Sea and unilateral activities to illegally construct artificial islands. She urged all parties not to alter the status quo in the East Sea, nor militarize, nor complicate the East Sea issues, and to resolve disputes peacefully based on the UN charter and international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and abide by the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and finalize as soon as possible the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
