Hanoi has seen rapid urbanization in areas and population

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have seen the biggest developments. Urban areas in Vietnam have increased by 2.8% annually, the highest growth rate in the region. Vietnam has no megacity of over 10 million people but Ho Chi Minh City (7.8 million people) and Hanoi (5.6 million people) are in the list of biggest cities in the region.

The report said almost 200 million people moved to urban areas in East Asia between 2000-2010. For the first time, the data compares urban areas and their populations in a consistent manner across East Asia, providing governments and local leaders with a better understanding of the shape and scale of growth so they can get urbanization right – creating opportunities for all.
