Vietnam’s consistent policy of taking care of and promoting role of senior citizens

(VOVworld) – The United Nations has observed October 1st as International Day of Older Persons to improve awareness on issues relating to older people and acknowledge their contributions to society. This year’s topic “Take a Stand Against Ageism” intends to raise social awareness on what is ageism discrimination and its serious impacts on the elderly.

Older people account for about 10% of Vietnam’s population or 10 million people. Showing respect for older people and parents is a time-honored tradition in Vietnam. The Party and State have policies to acknowledge the merits and contributions of older people to society such as healthcare, social protection and priorities, longevity congratulation ceremony, and other tourist and entertainment activities. Vietnam has 100 public and private centers offering services for older people.
