The 19th National CPC Congress marked China’s development over the last 5 years and decided orientations for the future.

China’s major achievements over the last 5 years

In the 1950s, China set four modernization goals to strengthen industry, agriculture, national defense, and science and technology. Due to social and political changes, China has not achieved development breakthroughs. Its leaders have focused on reform and an open door policy to develop a market economy while insisting on a path of public ownership and have raised China’s economy to 2nd place.

After taking office, President Xi Jinping launched a 5th modernization drive, using comprehensive reform and a tough anti-corruption movement to advance the rule of law. While continuing the four modernization goals, China concentrated on social and cultural reform and environmental improvement.

China has recorded significant advanced during the last 5 years in narrowing the development gap between urban and rural areas, purifying the state apparatus through the anti-corruption drive, and renovating its approach to economic development.

From 2012 to 2016, an average of 14 million people per year escaped poverty and income per capita in rural areas increased 10.7% annually.

China's anti-corruption campaign to "kill tigers and swat flies" has brought approximately 70,000 officials at all levels to trial. The leadership of the Party and government has been purified, restoring public trust and support. Although the global economy is still unstable, China has maintained its ranking as the world’s 2nd biggest economy with a strong, consistent growth rate.

But there are problems. A widening gap between regions has hampered China’s goal of becoming a "moderately prosperous society" by 2020. And public debt stands at 260% of GDP.

Important turning point

The 19th CPC National Congress has taken place in a critical period. The Party leadership has had to identify its successes, advantages, challenges, and orientations to push ahead with a political reform, improve people’s lives, and move toward a stable, fair, and prosperous society.

President Xi has pledged to build a modern communist country in the new period and turn China into the leading global power. This Congress has set a vision for the next 30 years to transform China into a basically modern socialist country by 2035 and into a powerful, modern socialist country by 2050.
