Non Nuoc Cao Bang named Vietnam’s second global geopark

(VOVWORLD) - Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark in Cao Bằng province was recognised as a global geopark by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council in Paris last week. This is the second UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark in Vietnam after Dong Van Karst Plateau, which received recognition eight years ago.

Non Nuoc Cao Bang, about 300 km north of Hanoi, covers more than 3,000 sq.km. The recognition will encourage Cao Bang province to work harder to protect the environment, its heritages, and its culture to promote tourism. Receiving the honor twice in 8 years proves Vietnam’s potential for geo-tourism which provides tourists information on the evolution and history of natural landscapes. Ha Long Bay, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and the Trang An relic site will soon become geo-tour locations in Vietnam.

Geoparks could ensure sustainable development in disadvantaged areas like Cao Bang province and Ha Giang, home to Dong Van Karst Plateau Geo-Park.

The UNESCO Global Geoparks designation is given to single, unified geographical areas where landscapes of geological significance are also rich in scientific, educational, aesthetic, archaeological, historical, social, and cultural values and biological diversity. The areas, managed with a holistic concept of protection and sustainable development, can have a significant impact on local communities’ sustainable socio-economic development.

Quang Ngai, Bac Kan, Phu Yen, Dak Nong, and Gia Lai province plan to develop geoparks and requests global recognition by UNESCO.
