Sherlock Holmes first appeared in 1887 in the novel “A study in scarlet.” He has been the lead character of Conan Doyle’s 4 novels and 56 short stories, becoming well-known for his wisdom, logical reasoning, and capacity for observation. Readers used to stand in long queues at newspaper kiosks to buy the first issue of a new Sherlock Holmes’ story. Various versions of his adventures have intrigued generations of fans.

But Conan Doyle fretted that his detective was so famous that he overshadowed the author’s other works. In 1893, Doyle attempted to end the detective series by letting the notorious Professor Moriarty to push Holmes from a cliff in Switzerland. But 8 years later, in the face of strong public pressure, Doyle wrote a new Sherlock Holmes story entitled “The hound the Baskervilles.” In 1903, Sherlock Holmes appeared again in “The adventure of the empty house.”

As perhaps the most famous fictional detective in the history of world literature, Sherlock Holmes has been recreated in movies and on TV. In 2010, the BBC began airing a modern adaptation called “Sherlock”, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which was enthusiastically received by viewers and critics.

Conan Doyle died at 71 but the immortal character he created remains a global icon 130 years later.
