The session will discuss “Making the UN Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable, and Sustainable Societies”. World leaders will gather at UN Headquarters to discuss global issues and the UN’s role in settling those issues.

Vietnam delivers a message of strengthening the global partnership

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will present Vietnam’s message of strengthening the global partnership for a world of peace, equality, and sustainable development for all people, while underscoring the need to abide by international law, peacefully prevent or resolve disputes, and refrain from the use or threat of armed force.

Vietnam stresses the importance of promoting multilateralism, strengthening the global partnership, sharing responsibility, and reforming the UN to make it stronger, more democratic, and more effective.

Vietnam-UN cooperation is a model

Vietnam joined the UN in September 20, 1977. Over the past 41 years, Vietnam-UN relations have developed and are considered a model of UN cooperation Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc said: “Vietnam has always considered its relationship with the UN the core of its external policy. Vietnam has always contributed to UN activities and supported the UN’s goals, regulations, and central role in maintaining international peace and security, promoting cooperation, and resolving global issues.”

Members of the Asia-Pacific Group at the UN met in May and nominated Vietnam as its sole candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure. The election will be held in June, 2019. If Vietnam is selected, it will be the second time Vietnam has participated in a UN security agency.

Vietnam has lead the response to the “Towards Unity in Action, One UN” model with a green One UN house being established in Hanoi. The Vietnamese government and 18 UN agencies signed the One Strategic Plan (OSP) for the period from 2017 to 2021 between the Vietnamese Government and 18 UN agencies.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc said: “Vietnam’s activities at the UN have demonstrated its external policy of independence and self-reliance for peace, cooperation, development, diversification, multilateralization, friendship, and partnership.”

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s participation at the General Debate shows Vietnam’s determination to contribute to the UN.
