Vietnam-India relations to see new milestones in 2017

(VOVworld)-2017 marks 45 years of diplomatic relations and 10 years of strategic partnership between Vietnam and India. The time-honored relationship has been boosted by mutual trust and understanding. 

The struggles for national freedom laid the foundation for Vietnam-India relations.  Bilateral friendship and solidarity have stood the test of time and further strengthened by mutual trust and understanding and consensus on many international issues including security in Asia. Progress has been made in development cooperation and assistance, political exchanges, security and defense cooperation, human resource development, trade, education, and culture.

2017 has been proclaimed “Friendship Year” between Vietnam and India, featuring cultural activities, meetings, food festivals and exhibitions. The 2 countries have exchanged visits at different levels, held periodic dialogues, and effectively implemented signed agreements and visions set by their leaders.

Economic cooperation is one of the five pillars in the strategic partnership between Vietnam and India. Two-way trade has reached 8 billion USD and is estimated to reach15 billion USD by 2020, focusing on textiles, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, jewelry, auto parts, machines, and footwear. Vietnam and India have agreed to gradually remove trade barriers in line with a framework agreement on comprehensive economic cooperation between ASEAN and India.

To enhance relations with East Asian nations, India has shifted from a Look East policy to an Act East policy. As coordinator of ASEAN-India relations in the 2015-2018 period, Vietnam has earned applause from India for its contributions to ASEAN-India cooperation.
