“Going into a trance” ritual depicted in Tran Tuan Long’s lacquer paintings

(VOVworld) -  The lacquer painting exhibition “Mediumship” by Tran Tuan Long is under way at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts, 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc street, Hanoi.

Opened on March 8th, it is the first fine-art exhibition about Đạo Mẫu (the worship of Mother Goddesses in Vietnam) since the practice of worshiping Mother Goddesses was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December, 2016.

Long spent 20 years producing 26 lacquer paintings to illustrate the “going into a trance” rituals.  He has successfully captured the medium’s incarnation into different deities. During the incarnation, the medium wears the costumes and mimic the actions of the deities while singers sing songs praising the deities. Long’s paintings have given an insight into the colorful spiritual world of Vietnamese people.

Visiting the exhibition, Pham Sanh Chau, Ambassador and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister on UNESCO Issues said: “Painter Tran Tuan Long has successfully portrayed the ‘going into a trance’ ritual. The paintings are beautiful.  The author has proved his amazing lacquer skills. The contrast and the color depth are powerful. I greatly admire this exhibition.”
Tran Tuan Long’s “Mediumship” exhibition will run until March 15th.
