Son Ca island of Vietnam’s Truong Sa archipelago is about 450m long and 102 m wide. When the tide goes out, the island is just 3.5m to 3.8m above sea level.
There are 9 lighthouses on Truong Sa archipelago. The 28-meter tall Son Ca tower was built in 2009.
Vu Van Luu, Head of Son Ca lighthouse, comes from Hai Phong city. He has been here since September, 2016.
Every year, the lighthouse head can take three months vacation.
He started working at Song Tu Tay lighthouse in 1993 and has since then been on duty at 6 different lighthouses on the Truong Sa archipelago.
Because of oceanic water and air, the keepers have to clean the lighthouse regularly to avoid possible electric leakage.
Working on top of the lighthouse is difficult.
“Every job has its hardship. We are familiar with this job”, Luu said.
