Addressing the opening ceremony, Amin Haji Mulia, the speaker of the Malaysian Parliament and head of the general assembly, said bringing a summit between ASEAN and AIPA leaders into agenda would increase the role of AIPA in ASEAN’s affairs. He said he believed parliamentarians could exert more efforts to strengthen the links between countries.

Deputy Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly, Huynh Ngoc Son, expected that the ASEAN community will ensure a harmonious combination of member countries’ interests on the basis of unity, cooperation and consensus. Vietnam agreed on the 36th AIPA theme of ASEAN community’s connectivity focusing on the people and the working agenda of the meeting. He called for more supervision by AIPA members in each ASEAN government’s implementation of the community’s vision after 2015, involving all stakeholders for sustainable development. He also expected the issuance of more legal documents to implement AIPA resolutions, information sharing among member legislative bodies and the supervision of government activities to ensure the ASEAN community’s sustainable development.
