Mr Turnbull earlier stepped down as Communications Minister and then challenged Abbott for the leadership of the Liberal Party and asked Abbott to convene a meeting to vote for a new leader. He said Abbott’s leadership was weakened by concerns about his management ability.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was re-elected deputy leader of the party, 70 votes to 30. In Australia, whoever is the leader of the majority party is automatically prime minister.
