New measures will be applied in May to reduce threats to Austria’s order and security. Applicants must provide an acceptable reason not to be sent to a safe third country or to their country of origin. Illegal refugees will automatically be sent back.  Austria will focus on the Brenner pass, on the border with Italy. Migrants have been entering Italy via the Mediterranean since the Balkan route was closed.

Germany’s deputy government spokeswoman Christiane Wirtz said a few things still need to be done to implement the EU-Turkey refugee agreement.
