Celebrations of 70th anniversary of war victory over fascism around the world

(VOVworld) – Various activities have been held around the world over the past three days to mark 70 years of the victory over fascism.

In London, the commemorative activities began on Friday. Hundreds of people including about 100 veterans who directly participated in World War II, representatives of the British Royal Family, religions, politicians, and military officials attended a ceremony at the Cenotaph Statue in memory of the war martyrs. On Saturday, the official celebration, bells of all churches in the UK rang at one time to commemorate the victory.

On Friday, Austrians held a concert entitled “Festival of Joy” at Heldenplatz (Hero's Square) in Vienna. President Heinz Fischer, ambassadors of members of the Commonwealth of Independent States and several Asian countries laid floral wreaths at the tombs of 18,000 soldiers of the former Soviet Union who died in the battle of Vienna to liberate Europe from the Nazi rule.

In Norway, fireworks were set to mark the end of World War II and flowers were laid at martyrs’ tombs with the participation of government leaders and veterans.

In Georgia May 9th is observed as national day in which state leaders, leaders of political parties, representatives of war veterans and social organizations will lay floral wreaths at the Grave of Unknown Soldier at the capital city of Tbilisi.

In France, during Friday celebration in Champs-Elysees avenue President Francois Hollande praised the contributions of all forces to the victory over fascism, especially young people and underlined their role in the current period adding that it’s time to hand over to the younger generations.

A special exhibition was organized at the German-Russian Museum in the Karlshorst district of Berlin to introduce precious materials about WWII and the Nazis’ surrender document in 1945 to the Red Army and allied forces. Also on display are firearms, canons, artillery cartridge, and essential items that have been collected during wartime.

Thousands of Americans gathered in Washington to see a performance of dozens of warplanes used during WWII.

Brazilian President Dilma Roussef spoke highly of contributions of the Brazilian expeditionaries to the struggle against fascism at a celebration in Brasilia.
