Conference discusses UNCLOS’s role in managing marine global commons

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese Ambassador to India Ton Sinh Thanh has underscored the East Sea’s strategic location and natural resources at a conference on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) being held in India.

He urged claimants in the East Sea to avoid altering the status quo of this area and respect the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC). Thanh stressed the role of regional nations and world powers, including India, in the East Sea issue. 

The conference discussed the legitimacy of UNCLOS & its continuing vitality in the 21st century, the role of UNCLOS in facilitating the peaceful settlement of disputes, and growing problems of non-compliance with UNCLOS.
