In 2011, the US announced plans to deploy missile defense systems in some Central and Eastern Europe countries, saying the move was to protect the US and Europe from potential terrorist threats but not to threaten Russia. Russia has said it would take appropriate military action if the US deploys the missile defense systems in the region.
