The summit was organized by the East African Community which includes Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Burundi. Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza did not attend the summit but sent Foreign Minister Alain Aime Nyamitwe to the meeting. The EAC leaders recommended that elections in Burundi be postponed to carry out other measures, which give the opposition and independent media an opportunity to freely express themselves. The political crisis occurred in Burundi since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced on April 25th to run for election. The opposition rejected Nkurunziza’s controversial bid for a third consecutive term, saying the move violates the constitution. But Burundi's constitutional court has ruled that Nkurunziza's third-term bid would not violate the constitution because he was elected in 2005 by parliament and not by the people. The Burundian government said parliamentary and presidential elections will take place this month as scheduled.
