(VOVworld) – On Tuesday, an Egyptian court overturned a three-year prison sentence for deposed President Hosni Mubarak on charges of embezzlement and ordered a retrial.

Mubarak's lawyer said he hopes his client will soon be released, because he has already served three years in prison. A lower court handed down the prison sentence against Mubarak in May last year after convicting him of embezzling more than 100,000 Egyptian pounds (about 14 million USD) earmarked for the maintenance of presidential palaces. It also imposed four-year prison sentences on Mubarak’s sons, Alaa and Gamal, on similar charges.

Egypt’s former President was ousted in February, 2011, after 18 days of anti-government protests, ending his 30-year presidency. The 86-year-old former leader has been serving his sentence at a military hospital in Cairo.
