EU extends Iran human rights sanctions by a year

(VOVWORLD) - EU foreign ministers on Monday decided to prolong sanctions against Iran until next year due to its violation of human rights.

The sanctions include freezing the assets of 82 people, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and a police unit specialized in cybercrime.

The EU first passed the sanctions in 2011 in response to the Iranian government's crackdown against protesters during and after the 2009 elections.

US President Donald Trump said Monday he is classifying the IRGC as a terrorist organization because it is the Iranian government’s primary means of directing and implementing its global terrorist campaign.
