EU recognizes new Moldovan government

(VOVWORLD) -The European Union on Sunday recognized the new Moldovan government set up on Saturday, according to a joint statement by EU High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini and EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

The statement said the European Union approves the decisions taken by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, including the formation of a new government coalition. Senior EU officials called for "calm and restraint," and said the EU "stands ready to work with the democratically legitimate government". The statement concluded by saying a dialogue between democratically elected representatives is the key to finding a solution to the current political crisis.

The Constitutional Court removed President Igor Dodon from office and delegated his powers to former Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who immediately signed a decree dismissing the parliament and calling for snap elections on September 6.
