(VOVworld) – French President Francois Hollande said on Monday that France will take in more than 20,000 migrants over the next 2 years and call on EU member countries to have a common policy to deal with the biggest migrant crisis.
Hollande told reporters in Paris that the European Commission will announce a proposal to allocate 120,000 refugees to EU members and France is ready to accept 24,000 more people as part of the scheme.

Hollande also warned that the EU’s Schengen zone which ensures free cross-border movement between participating countries “would collapse” without a united policy on the current migration.

He noted that France will put forth an international conference on refugees to be held in Paris.

The same day, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Maria Garcia-Margallo pledged that Spain will receive migrants despite its economic difficulties.

Meanwhile Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticized the EC’s proposal to distribute quota of illegal migrants, saying that the plan will become useless if EU members fail to secure the EU’s borders. Orban said the proposal only encourages more refugees to the union and criticized a recent act by Germany and Austria to welcome thousands of migrants who were stuck in Hungary.
