He made the remark during an interview with a Paris-based VOV correspondent right after the results of the French presidential election had been announced. Mr. Blanchenmaison told VOV: "I think it’s very important for France to pay a lot more attention to every Asian country, especially Vietnam. As Southeast Asia has the highest growth rate, and competitive markets, French businesses are flocking to China, India, and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. The Asia-Europe Summit is also taking place this November in Vientiane, Laos, with many EU leaders taking part, including the new French president. I think our new President will attach a lot of importance to deepening ties with other European and ASEAN countries, with Vietnam being its key partner."
The diplomat said that Hollande’s victory is a positive sign for France’s relationship with Asia, as Vietnam is an important friend. He added that next year is the Vietnamese-French Friendship Year and a new government at this time will help to improve ties between the two countries. As the French ambassador to Vietnam under the late President Francois Mitterand, Claude Blanchemaison is now France’s representative at the Asian-European Association.
